Our Coron adventure is based on at the northernmost point of Palawan province. Coron is a 71 square kilometer island off the coast of Busuanga, part of the Calamian Group. Coron is home to an indigenous population who have little or no contact with the outside world. Coron is unusual in that it has high cliffs, over 2000 feet high, small mangrove swamp inlets and crystal clear water full of coral. The limestone island has seven lakes all of which are linked to the sea (and probably to each other) by underground caves. The lakes are fed by hot springs and are considerably less saline than the sea. To date, the only access into the lakes themselves is portage (carrying the boats overland) although we have discovered one "hong" (inland lagoon) that is not on the map connected by a small cave to the sea. The island is a haven for birds, monkeys and monitor lizards. Accommodation during the trip is beach camping. Guests paddle themselves, but we do use a support boat to bring fresh supplies and ice.
